Just as thousands of Atlantans came out on the one-month anniversary of the death of Trayvon Martin for a peaceful rally and march, the Georgia Legislature’s 2012 session was in its final stretch.  Ironically, many Georgians learned that the Republican-controlled legislature was responsible for enacting the same Stand Your Ground Law that is currently protecting Mark Zimmerman in Florida. Georgia’s law didn’t take effect until a few years ago when the GOP took control of the state legislature, after the Democrats loss their footing.

Participants at Monday’s Georgia’s state Capitol rally also learned that a bill will be introduced within the next day by the Democrats to repeal this law. Seeing that the Republicans are in control of the state, it seems as though this could be an uphill battle just as it has become to get Martin’s accuser arrested.

Ironically, in a report released from the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies last year, African Americans voters and elected official in the South have less influence now than at any time since the civil rights area. Just imagine where we would be if we didn’t have President Obama in office, who just happens to be of African descent? Also as you thumb through the photos you’ll notice that Georgia’s state Capitol, which is located in downtown Atlanta sits on the corner of  M. L. King Dr. What a parallel? This should give you some food for thought. Hopefully, we should all realize the importance of voting in both local and national elections, as a result of the death of young Trayvon.
