Van Jones to Give Commencement Address at Morehouse

CNN commentator Van Jones will be on hand at Morehouse College to deliver the address at its 133rd Commencement ceremony, the Atlanta school announced. Jones, who hosts the news networks’ show “The Messy Truth” served as White House adviser under the Obama administration and also authored the books Rebuild the Dream and The Green Collar Economy. “Our students not only grow intellectually, they also grow in their understanding of their responsibility to serve their communities,” said Morehouse’s Interim President Bill Taggart.. “Van Jones’ work in social justice and the environment will inspire our students to become servant leaders in their careers.” Commencement exercises for Morehouse’s 2017 class will be held May 21.

Georgia Policemen Charged in Beating of Motorist Caught on Video

Criminal warrants have been issued for two Gwinnett County, Ga., officers who were videotaped punching and kicking a man they were arresting. Sgt. Michael Bongiovanni and Master Officer Robert McDonald were charged with misdemeanor battery and violating their oaths of office, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution. The video of the two cops abusing Demetrious Hollins, 21, surfaced about two weeks ago. He was pulled over for driving a car without a license plate and changing lanes without signaling. In the footage, Hollins does not appear to be resisting arrest. The officers were fired by Gwinnett Police Chief Butch Ayers.

Arkansas Set to Execute Fourth Prisoner in Group

Arkansas is planning on Thursday to go through with its third execution this week and its fourth since last week. Kenneth Williams, 38, is scheduled to die by lethal injection for a 1999 murder after escaping from the same prison in which he had been held. A stay request for him has been rejected. Williams was originally part of a group of eight inmates slated for execution over 11 nights, but some of the inmates have been able to avoid being put to death because of legal filings. Earlier this week, Jack Jones and Marcel Williams were executed on the same night. Last week the state executed Ledell Lee despite several appeal attempts.

Ann Coulter Speech at U-C Berkeley Called Off

Controversial conservative writer Ann Coulter will not make her planned Thursday speech at the University of California Berkeley amid concerns over campus violence at her appearance. Coulter, a frequent Fox News contributors tweeted that the school cancelled the speech, but U-C Berkeley officials denied that and said they never stopped her from coming to the campus. A news release sent out by the school said they could not provide a venue for Coulter solely because of safety concerns. Earlier in April two factions, one pro-Trump, another anti-Trump clashed on the campus, resulting a fistfights and bloodied noses.
