The topic of police brutality against black men and women has been prevalent within the media over the past five years, but the White House still considers the death of Sacramento father Stephon Clark a “local matter.”

During a Wednesday press briefing, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders responded to questions about the shooting, as well as to news that officers who killed Alton Sterling would not be charged, saying it’s “something that is a local matter and that’s something that we feel should be left up to the local authorities at this point in time.”

While she recognized Clark being shot 20 times by police in his grandmother’s backyard as a “terrible incident,” she was sure to emphasize President Trump’s support of law enforcement.

“We want to make sure that all law enforcement is carrying out the letter of the law.”

The Congressional Black Caucus responded to the statement via Twitter.
