A 32-year-old London-based Black woman has died while in police custody.

Sarah Reed was found dead in her cell at London’s Holloway Prison on Jan. 11. She had been detained for shoplifting.

Met Police Officer James Kiddie was found guilty of common assault in connection to an attack on Reed while detaining her on the 2012 shoplifting charge. According to reports, the 45-year-old law enforcement official was caught on closed-circuit television grabbing Ms. Reed by the hair and punching her as she lay on the floor of a woman’s clothing store.

Kiddie was terminated from the force and sentenced to a community order of 150 hours for common assault.

Several people have expressed anger on social media in response to Reed’s death and how she was treated.
