The Black and the Blue: A Look at Black Cops in TV and Film
The Academy Award-winning mystery film <em>In the Heat of the Night </em>(1967) and its equally popular sequels (1970, 1971) star movie legend Sidney Poitier in the iconic role of Detective (then Captain) Virgil Tibbs. &nbsp; The series &quot;Hill Street Blues&quot; (1981-1987) launched the careers of several Black actors including Michael Warren as Officer Bobby Hill and Taurean Blacque as Detective Neal Washington.&nbsp; &nbsp; Often credited as the first &ldquo;buddy cop&rdquo; movie, <em>48 Hrs. </em>(1982) and the 1990 sequel starred Eddie Murphy, making his film debut as former police Officer Reggie Hammond.&nbsp; &nbsp; Murphy next beat out several top actors for the role of police Officer Axel Foley in the box office hit trilogy <em>Beverly Hills Cop</em> (1984, 1987, 1994)&nbsp; &nbsp; Philip Michael Thomas &amp; Olivia Brown played detectives Ricardo &quot;Rico&quot; Tubbs and Trudy Joplin in the long-running series<em> Miami Vice </em>(1984-1990) &nbsp; Gregory Hines starred in action/comedy <em>Running Scared</em> (1986) as Detective Ray Hughes alongside comedian Billy Crystal, who plays his partner Detective Danny Costanzo. &nbsp; Representing for the ladies, Holly Robinson Peete was one of the first Black female cops to be featured on television in her role as Sergeant Judith Judy Hoffs on <em>21 Jump Street</em> (1987-1991.)&nbsp; Film veteran Danny Glover held it down for the LAPD as homicide Detective Roger Murtaugh in the Lethal Weapon quadrilogy (1987, 1989, 1992, 1998.)
