13 Beauty Trends Every Black Girl Should Try

We think Black girls do all beauty trends best, and now you should too

July 18, 2013

We see and hear it all the time: women admiring one another for their striking and sometimes bold looks, but then resorting to feeling like they wouldn’t be able to pull the trend off themselves. Well, now is the time to stop admiring and start showing off!

If there’s one thing we know, it’s that Black women make all beauty trends stand out. Remember, we’ve even started a good amount of them. While we’re in the thick of summer, we want you to spice it up by doing something daring with your style routine. Don’t know where to start? We’ve offered a few trends we adore on you all!

Bright Eye Shadows: They’re back! For work, line your lid with a striking color and nude lip, but go all out on the weekend with a full sweep across your eyes. Our favorite colors: hot pink, burnt oranges, turquoise blues and rich metallics.

Makeup Forever Neon Pink #75 Eyeshadow

Purple Lipstick: Ditch the red, pinks and nudes and get sassy with a lavender purple. This color happens to look good on all complexions of Black women and it looks best in a matte finish. But if you do go glossy, rock with a single, thin liquid lined eye, two coats of mascara and a sheer blush. Let the lips do the talking!

Lip Bar: Lavender Mojito

Wearing Bronzer: Please, just wear it.

Cover Girl Queen Bronzer

Shimmery, Shimmery Eyes: Most women run from this trend from the fear of looking like a tween. But the trick is to choose the right base shades, like golds, mauves and pinks. Dab on a good primer to keep the fine glitter from creasing.

The Coral Face: All coral everything! Coral eyes, coral cheeks and coral lips! It’s a staple color that you can wear out at night, on a date, to the office and around running errands, and you won’t look crazy. This color is the perfect balance between making a statement and being a little subtle.

NARS Blush in Exhibit A

Bold Pink Cheeks: It may sound crazy, but the deeper your complexion, the brighter you should go. Have fun with blush! Pair with a sexy gloss and cat eyes, and I swear everyone will shoot a compliment your way.

Thick Eyebrows: They scream model chic when groomed right. Fill your brows in with a perfecting kit and shape with tweezers. Full brows look so amazing with hair pulled back, off the face or wild, thick manes.

Illamasqua Brow Cake in Gaze

Funky Nail Art: Don’t be afraid to try something artistic on your nails. You don’t have to have your own personal nail artist to design you a one-of-a-kind creation. Nail polish strips do just the job for you, and they last pretty long.

Sally Hansen Nail Effects Nail Strips in Kitty Kitty:

Wear a Daring Neon Lip: If you have the confidence to wear this trend, you have the confidence to do anything in life. Keep the rest of your makeup simple and add a dab of moisturizer, since high-pigmented colors can be drying.

NARS Semi-Matte Lipstick in Heat Wave

A Real Nude Face: Go the opposite route in makeup trends this summer with a monochromatic nude face. When matched perfectly, you look fresh, well rested and glowing.

The High Bun: Beat the heat, look sexy and pull attention to those amazing attributes with a tight high bun. Play messy with a looser bun that is the perfect accessory to an evening on the town.

Big, sexy hair: Run wild and free with hair blowing in the wind. (Okay, the heat, but you get the picture.) We think the frizzier and untamed, the better.

INDIQUE Virgin Hair

Natural Lashes: Ditch the faux lash extensions; instead, lather an extra coat of your favorite mascara.
