Black girls’ fascination with blush is definitely passed down by our gorgeous mommies, who teased our adolescent makeup fetishes with a vanity decorated with beautiful rouge. Though eyeliner, gloss and mascara rule our early years, blush is the touch of sophistication that ushers women into adulthood.

There are many ways to apply blush, and with the help of Tia DantzlerJennifer Hudson’s makeup artist, we’ve identified four fabulous ways to enhance your look.

1. Signature/ On-the-go: The essential rosy hue that compliments every look.

“Start off by using a large fluffy blush brush and Diorskin Shimmer Star Blush, which gives a soft, luminous glow to your skin. When trying to achieve a soft application, I would suggest tapping the brush against a hard surface to remove the access of powder. Smile, then lightly dust your cheeks and remember that blending is the key to achieving the perfect flawless application.”

2. Edgy glam: A striking swipe fit for any runway.

“If you want a more edgy look, start at the top of your jawbone with a slightly darker color than your skin tone to contour. By using a tapered contour brush with a precise tip, you have more control to sculpt the hollows of your cheeks. Be sure to blend so you don't have any harsh lines.”

3. Sweetheart: The look that reads feminine, soft and angelic.

“Try using Stila's Custom Color Blush in Coral which is a one-shade-fits-all powder blush. It also has a hint of gold shimmer. With a large blush brush, softly dust the apples of your cheeks for a hint of color. Use a highlighter on the top of your cheek bones for a dewy effect.”

4. Ethereal: The perfect natural hue for minimalists.

“To achieve the barely there look, try using a bronzer with a hint of shimmer for a soft, natural look. This look really pops under lights, yet it’s not too dramatic. I love trying this look by using Guerlain Bronzing Powder, as this powder leaves a natural, radiant, luminous glow to your skin.”
