A new year may call for more than a new look—sometimes it calls for a career change! That’s exactly what Smooth ‘N Shine celebrity stylist Larry Sims did 15 years ago. Once a dancer and choreographer for influential musical artists including Missy Elliott and Sean “Diddy” Combs, Sims decided to pursue his passion for hair. Now celebrities such as Queen Latifah, Gabrielle Union, Mary J. Blige and more have him on speed dial for their red carpet appearances. Read on for Sims 2013 hair resolutions that we should all abide by!

EBONY: You travel the globe for your clients. What are your key essential products that you like to travel with?

Larry Sims: One of my key essential products is my Bio Ionic OnePass Straightening Iron (starting from $106; amazon.com). I love it because you literally can go over the hair one time, and it gives a flawless bone-straight finish. Also, my iPad. Being able to access my music while working sets the tone to a beautiful experience with me! I’m currently listening to Tweet, Tamar Braxton, Brandy and Kim Burrell.

EBONY: What should every woman’s New Year’s hair resolution be?

LS: Every woman’s New Year’s hair resolution should be to love their hair like they love their life! Using excessive amounts of heat and chemicals on your hair should definitely be a no-no in 2013!

EBONY: What is a quick and easy way to give yourself a “makeover” without getting a cut or color?

LS: Embracing different textures is a great way to change your look up without cutting or coloring. If your hair is typically straight, try braiding it at night and taking it out in the morning for a textured, chunky look. And if your hair is typically curly or wavy, try doing more sleek, bone-straight styles this year!

EBONY: What’s the best way to repair damaged winter hair?

LS: The best way to repair damaged winter hair is to use any sort of deep conditioning, or mask treatment to replenish moisture from the harsh dryness of the cold winter months. For hair that is extensively damaged, sitting under the blow dryer with your choice of a moisturizing treatment will give you added moisture inside of the cuticle. [Editor’s Note: Try Sims’s favorite Smooth ‘N Shine Olive & Tea Tree RevivOil Nourishing Deep Recovery Conditioner ($4.99 for 13.5oz; drugstore.com)]

EBONY: What is one hair myth you hope is eliminated in 2013?

LS: Women with longer hair tend to not want to clip their ends to salvage the length. In 2013, I want women with long and short hair to trim their ends. Hoarding onto damaged ends only procrastinates the growth process.

EBONY: Rumor has it you are launching your first line of professional products. What can you share with Ebony.com readers?

LS: I’m proud to announce: in 2013, I’m launching my first line of professional products in collaboration with Smooth ‘N Shine. Look out for Go Pro Curls by Larry Sims, specifically for women that wear their hair natural. More details coming soon!—JH
