New Year? New Hue! The time for change is now. With today’s easy at-home fixes and expert innovations, there’s no reason not to freshen up your look. We turned to seasoned professionals who offer a few simple tricks and product suggestions to help you  retouch your roots like a boss.

1 Start smart
Preserving a fresh dye job begins with selecting the right shampoo and conditioner. Look for products that won’t strip your hair. “Using color-safe and sulfate-free shampoo is the best way to preserve permanent color,” says Barri Gibson, a hairstylist and colorist at More Than Perfect Hair Studio in South Orange, N.J. Try Serge Normant Meta Silk Shampoo ($24; shopsergenormant.com). The natural ingredients, including rice and camellia oil, will leave your hair manageable and soft.

2 Do try this  at home
We know the thought of going to a salon for all-over color application can be intimidating for a man. Luckily, there are tons of new at-home options, such as traditional liquid applications and permanent powder deposits that are budget-friendly, and get the job done. For best results, comb through your hair with Bigen EZ Color ($9.99; select beauty supply stores).

3 Watch your tone
Want to keep a little salt in your pepper? Go for it! “The key to great-looking gray hair is making sure it’s as bright as possible,” explains Gibson. “Shampoos such as Clairol Professional Shimmer Lights and Softsheen-Carson Bantu Yellow-Out conditioner are examples of products that enhance most silver tones. For darker shades, semipermanent or temporary glosses can be used to condition and add shine.” We love Clairol Professional Flare ($5.99; SallyBeauty), which leaves the hair with a vibrant glossy finish.
