This week we caught up with Spifster Sutton from Shervan Salon in Chicago to discuss her Picasso-inspired manicure, or what she refers to as a “Spif.”

The Trend: After Jay Z reminded us all of Picasso’s greatness in “Picasso Baby,” there was only a matter of time before Picasso-inspired everything was popping up left and right. Picasso on nails may be the best one yet.

EBONY: How did you create this design?

Spifster Sutton: My great friend Brittany set up a late night nail session over drinks, and she came with a PicStitch of her favorite Picasso works. I took my picks on what I felt fit her the most and the coolest. I chose colors that were mute, and then I livened the black lines with fresh colored accents to compliment her skin tone. I accented the remaining nails with my freestyle lines, inspired by Picasso’s continuous line method. I loved them. ’Twas a fun session!

EBONY: What do you feel is your artistic significance when it comes to nail art?

SS: My attention to detail, and that I can create the perfect straight line of any width. Seamless lines really make or break the nail design. It can take you from something like the Picasso nails to tacky Picasso knock-offs.

Editor’s note: This isn’t the only art-inspired design Spifster has created. She’s done Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol designs on my nails, and I loved them!
