This week we caught up with Kandi Banks, owner of KandiLand Nail Art Studio based in Long Beach, CA where she shared a quick, easy and funky freestyle art design she created for a recent client. We admire the seamless execution of her latest freestyle design. Kandi combines multiple nail art trends – watercolor, graffiti, abstract, and 3D jewels – for a look that is as cohesive as it is cool. Done in brighter versions of primary colors and finished with mesmerizing jewel accents, this manicure will surely be the hot topic where ever you go!

Read on to learn more about this freestyle manicure and discover more about the nail artist behind it.

EBONY: Kandi, what inspired the design?

KB: I have an option on my menu called, “Beggars Can’t Be Choosers.” With this option, the client pays a set price and I have total control over the designs and colors. I just let my brain work freely.

EBONY: What materials were used to create the design?

KB: I used Bio Seaweed Gel colors in White, Beach Babe, and Aqua. The designs were done with acrylic paint and a small brush.

EBONY: How did you become a nail artist?

KB: I randomly became a nail artist. I have been an artist my entire life, so nails became my small canvas. I like seeing how detailed my designs can get on such a small space.

EBONY: What do you feel is your artistic significance when it comes to nail art?

KB: Clean art, quality nails, and a variety of styles. I don’t have just one particular style. I like to think my artistic ability is similar to that of a chameleon; I’m easily able to switch it up.

EBONY: What is one piece of advice you’d give to aspiring nail artists?

KB: To make sure all your products are of high quality. You don’t ever want to damage your clients’ hands or nails.
