This week we caught up with Mimi Wilson, a freelance nail artist based in Brooklyn, NY. For fall, we’re excited about subtle interpretations of trends. Mimi’s floral and polka dot manicure is a great example. We’ve fallen for her soft take on the mixed prints trend. The chic color selection ensures this fresh design can be worn with confidence well into winter.

Read on to discover the exact shades used to create this manicure, plus learn more about the nail artist behind it.

EBONY: Mimi, what inspired the design?

MW: My client wanted a “soft floral” look, something we’re seeing a lot through fall. So, I decided to create this design for her!

EBONY: How did you create the design?

MW: I started with a pale pink. I used China Glaze Gelaze in “Diva Bride.” The flowers and vines were painted by hand with acrylic paint. The dots were applied using a dotting tool. For a little added glam, small pieces of gold leaf were added to give it that extra pop.

EBONY: How did you become a nail artist?

MW: Art has always been a part of my life. Early 2011, I was polishing my nails as a stress reliever from my stressful job. After months, I realized that I wasn’t half bad at it. I put myself through nail school, and in 2013 I began my career as a manicurist.

EBONY: Any favorite upcoming fall trends? Or colors?

MW: Opaque nudes and dark berry shades are in for fall. I’m loving “Taylor” by Zoya and “Doll” by RGB for nude shades. For berry shades, I love “Lael” by Zoya and “Deep” from RGB.

EBONY: What do you suggest to your customers to promote healthy nails and growth?

MW: Nail health truly does start from within. Drink plenty of water and eat as clean as possible. Since the cold weather months are approaching, I would definitely amp up the moisture. I always suggest my clients add coconut oil as a daily moisturizer for hands and especially cuticles.
