This week we caught up with Imagine Uhlenbrock, a freelance nail artist based in Omaha, Nebraska. We love her interpretation of the hit television show The Twilight Zone. Monochrome and moody, this design is full of intricate details  – swirls, stars, and sayings, oh my! Imagine truly captured the elements of the sci-fi show with this cool manicure.

Read on to find out how to re-create this manicure and learn more about the nail artist behind it.

EBONY: Imagine, what inspired the design?

IU: My client came in wanting The Twilight Zonethemed nails for her wedding. She wanted to get married on the anniversary of The Twilight Zone, which also happened to be her and her fiancé’s tenth anniversary. They went down to Vegas for the ceremony and it was officiated by an impersonator of Rod Sterling, the host of the popular show.

EBONY: How did you create the design?

IU: The base color is a gel polish called “In the Zone” (perfect, right?) by Ink. It’s a soft black with gold shimmer. All of the designs were hand painted using a tiny art brush and Presto Art Gels in black, white, and “Let’s Hit the Bunny Slope” by Gelish (a medium gray). To seal the designs I used Bio Seaweed Gel Diamond Shine Top Gel Polish.

EBONY: How did you become a nail artist?

IU: I started doing my own nails when I was about four years old and it’s evolved over the years into a passion and a business.

EBONY: Any favorite upcoming fall trends? Or colors?

IU: My favorite trends for fall nails are Halloween-inspired nails, delicate designs, glitter, and the vampy colors associated with fall.

EBONY: What do you suggest to your customers to promote healthy nails and growth?

IU: To promote healthy nails and growth I always urge my clients to keep their hands well moisturized, eat good oils and fats, get plenty of protein, and stay hydrated. The appearance of your nails, hair, and skin are direct reflections of your inner health. Put good in, get good out.
