Maintenance for dreadlocks isn’t as simple as it appears, especially when you re-twist them yourself. Between sweating from the gym and the summer heat, I’ve been having trouble with my hair actually staying freshly re-twisted, and I’ve been looking for new products.

Last week I tried Murray’s Gel Loc-Lock and it was love at first try. I applied the product to my hair after a good wash and conditioning and started to re-twist using the gel. Locks have the toughest maintenance, and if this product works for my hair, I would definitely recommend it for two-strand twists, twist outs, and any other natural styles that require a firm hold. If you’re like me, then you’re always on the prowl looking for the most effective and cost efficient products for natural hair. I’ve found us the next best thing.

I love that my hair didn’t flake up at all. Sometimes the hardest part about trying new gels is the white-flake residue it leaves in your hair. But that didn’t happen with this gel cream. The product texture is a mix between the feel of a gel substance and the weight of creamy hair oil.

Make sure that after application to your style, you sit under the dryer and allow your hair to fully dry. I dislike dryers just as much as the next naturalista, but it really does play a role in how long your style lasts. For the best results, also mix in a light textured hair oil with the lock gel to make sure that your hair receives moisture. The gel alone didn’t leave my hair dry initially, but you always want to make sure your hair is moisturized enough to withstand the conditions of summer weather. I also like that it doesn’t take much application of the product to obtain firm results.

Murray’s Gel Loc Lock has definitely been added to my list of must-have products. It is sold at Sally’s Beauty Supply’s and Walgreens nationwide for the affordable price of $3.99 for an eight oz. container. Try it out and let us know what you think on Twitter @EBONYMag!
