Play it safe or go for the gold?

That question rooted itself in every discussion about this year’s Oscar fashion. For many, the expectation of greatness from Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer lived up to the hype with Davis opting for an emerald Vera Wang gown and Spencer sticking with Tadashi Shoji.

For others, the plainness of another beaded gown traipsing down the red carpet felt too pageantry for these once in a lifetime nominations. Despite the critic’s quips, there were curve-hugging gowns that paid homage to Old Hollywood glamour, baubles that rivaled Elizabeth Taylor, and crisp bespoke suits that were tailored to perfection.
