HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR HAIRSTYLE?

I’d say it’s a mix between hardcore “punk” and a more classic look, but it’s still quite a radical spin on an African tradition: Red dreads!

I’ve always felt most at ease with the color red. It reminds me of the royal color of the Benin Kingdom or the shade of my aura. I went through a few life changes recently and my hair, or the decision to style my hair this way, was sort of a propelling force through those changes to help me get where I am today.

I decided on the yarn locs, because it is reminiscent of the West African tradition of hair “threading”, which is typically done with rubber wire [or thread]. This protective style allows me to express myself through my locs, while staying clear of harmful chemicals and harsh weather. It also allows my natural hair to thrive.

WHAT PRODUCTS AND PROCESSES DO YOU USE TO STYLE YOUR HAIR?

I use a lot of yarn and patience. I condition my hair before I begin the process. I keep the roots oiled and clean with some essential oils and a rub down with a washcloth every once in a while. And when it’s time for a replacement, which is every 2-3 months, I condition it again.

To avoid unraveling and hair sticking up all over the place, I have to remember to wrap it up before I go to bed. Although, I‘ve got to say that I don’t mind it sticking up so it can do its own thing–it adds to the whole punk appeal.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO STYLE YOUR HAIR THIS WAY?

If I do it myself, it’s essentially the price of a ball of yarn and a day off work, which is convenient and works for my thrifty lifestyle. To have it done in the hair salon can range between $100 and $120 each visit.

It’s worth it for the look any day! I’ve never felt more in tune with myself than in the time I’ve spent with my red locs.
