Nothing’s got stuck in my brain this past holiday week quite like Kwame Butler of Inky Jack sneer-singing his refrain, “As we get stuck in L.A…” I first spotted the “Red for Days” video during a Saturday night munchy-thon spent watching Brooklyn Independent Media, a jewel in the crown of New York City’s public access television.
“Red for Days” is the “darkwave dubrock” of Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter Kwame Butler and producer Dipesh Sinha, a.k.a. Inky Jack. This song’s really on some forward-looking, genre-ignoring vibe for fans of indie prog-rockers like The Veldt or TV on the Radio. It’s like a grunge lullaby about the joys and perils of cannabis-induced “escapism.”
There’s something especially primal and powerful about the way Butler’s vocal delivery—wary-eyed, MC-swagger-like in the rhythm pocket and just plain soulful—shoves its way past a barricade of distorted guitars and a crunk backbeat that really gives “Red for Days” its wings.
