‘Romance Dawn’

“Romance Dawn” is Radkey’s rad new video (a standout track from their 2013 four-track Devil Fruit EP), a fitting finale for EBONY.com’s SXSW coverage—because we figured we’d go out with a bang. This teenaged trio from St. Joseph, Missouri loves Japanese anime, hates milk, and was inspired by Jack Black’s deranged, rock-n-roll loving evangelist-teacher from School of Rock. Black’s character got Dee (vox/guitar), Isaiah (bass) and Solomon (drums) all stoked to pick up their own instruments and go at it.

Any band who makes a song scolding their Black high school classmate for letting his White “friends” call him the N-word for fun (and names it “N.I.G.G.A. (Not Okay)”) is definitely a friend of this site. Fans of ’70s punk rockers The Ramones and the almighty Fishbone will especially dig their style. Peep the color-splashed graphic treatment for “Romance Dawn” and prepare yourself for a gentle trip to the Black Hardcore, at warp speed.—Sun Singleton
