The gluten -free life can be frustrating, especially when hunger pangs kick in while you’re out and about, and the only available options for snacks seem to be loaded with products of wheat and grain. It’s also frustrating that many products that are labeled “gluten-free” taste like cardboard. This lifestyle requires willpower, vigilance and a lot of trial and error because sometimes, you never know what you’re going to get when it comes to new food. In my case, I’ve amassed an arsenal of snacks that have become my go to products when hunger strikes. Here are 10 great snacks for your gluten-free diet.

1. Apples and Bananas

Common fruit like apples and bananas are among the most wallet friendly options. Both are simple, packed with vitamins and minerals and are easy to tote around without making a major mess. They’re also easy to find virtually everywhere; even drug stores are starting to get in on selling produce. In the case of both fruit, a delicious and filling way to eat them is by topping them with almond butter (or whatever nut butter you prefer) and gluten free granola.

2. KIND Bars

KIND bars are nut-based bars that come in delicious combinations like caramel almond and sea salt, maple glazed pecan and sea salt, Madagascar vanilla almond, almond and coconut, and more. My personal favorites are dark chocolate and sea salt, cashew and ginger spice and almonds and apricots.

3. Lara Bars

Lara bars are among some of the most basic bars on the market, meaning, they contain very few ingredients typically, nuts, fruit and dates. My favorites are banana bread and carrot cake.

4. Nuts

Nuts are another common, economical and simple option for those who aren’t allergic. My go to’s are almonds and walnuts but there’s a vast world of nutmeat to choose from.

5. Bobo’s Oat Bars

Bobo’s Oat Bars are the product of a Colorado-based company that produces flavors like peanut butter, chocolate, cranberry, strawberry and more. The tasty and also hearty bars have a moist, cake-like consistency that makes them excellent for consumption any time, but especially for breakfast.

6. Yogurt Sprinkled With Granola

If you consume dairy then don’t forget about good ol’ yogurt. It’s the granola part that you have to be concerned about. My choice for gluten free granola is Udi’s, which comes in a variety of flavors like vanilla, blueberry cashew, original, cherry walnut and more.

7. Cheese

If eating cheese is your thing then don’t forget about string cheese or even Laughing Cow cheese.

8. Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolate, if you purchase the right kind, is loaded with nutrients and can be satisfying. Read your labels to make sure you’re not getting sugary candy that will do nothing for you but make you crash and burn. According to Dr. Oz, you want to choose dark chocolate that is 70% cacao in order to reap the health benefits. Read more about how to choose dark chocolate here.

9. Food Should Taste Good Chips

This brand makes a variety of chips made out of things like potatoes, quinoa, brown rice and corn, in various flavors. If your taste buds prefer spicy then go for jalopeno but if you like to keep it simple, then check out multigrain. An added bonus about these chips is that they do double duty as chips but also crackers so grab the guacamole and chow down.

10.  Kale Chips

Kale is getting a lot of love lately and for good reason. It’s a nutritionally beneficial and sturdy leaf that makes it versatile. One of the most delicious ways to eat them is as chips. Prepackaged kale chips can be expensive but you can save by making them at home. If you don’t have a dehydrator (the best way to make them) then you can make them in an oven on low heat.
