Dr. Oz appeared on The Breakfast Club with Charlamagne and DJ Envy. The three men held a conversation about the current trend of detoxing and how obesity and diet can contribute to cancer and mental health.

Detoxing has become a dietary trend, and many people use it as a form of weight loss. However, Dr. Oz said that detox should not be used that way, and that it is a way to allow some of your organs to rest. “It’s not a weight loss technique, just to be clear,” the cardiothoracic surgeon said when asked about detoxing. “It’s not about starving yourself; that’s not how you detoxify. Most people are starving right now even though they are overweight. What you want to do ideally is find a plan that allows your gut bacteria to repopulate, rest your liver, rest your intestines, detoxify and then you eat the nutrients you need to fill your body.”

Dr. Oz then talked about how apple cider vinegar, yogurt and cabbage can be good components in a detox because they allow good bacteria to prosper. The doctor also clarified that the whole point of a detox is to “rejuvenate your body and make you feel alive again,” something that cannot happen if you’re starving yourself.

The doctor shared his thoughts on detoxing starting at the 1:30 mark of the video above.
