Funny guy and host of NBC’s “America’s Got Talent,” Nick Cannon, never thought twice about his kidneys. However, after being hospitalized last year for an acute kidney injury, and later diagnosed with lupus nephritis, Nick is now spreading the word about kidneys and kidney disease. As the new host of the National Kidney Foundation Kidney Walk, Nick wants to let people know how important our kidneys are to having good health and how imperative it is to get them checked periodically. “The kidneys filter out toxins in the blood, acting as the body’s purifier, but unless they stop working, people pay no attention,” Canon says. “The fact is, there are 26 million Americans with kidney disease and most don’t know they have it. 1 in 3 people in this country are at risk because of high blood pressure and diabetes—the two leading causes of kidney failure. So none of us can afford to ignore this anymore”, Cannon continues. Nick attributes his lupus to poor eating habits and now incorporates low fat, sugar, and sodium options into his diet.

The National Kidney Foundation Kidney Walk was held on October 14, 2012 in New York City’s South Street Seaport. The 5k stroll rose over $649,000 and included 8,000 walkers. “This walk will help those at risk take the lifesaving step of getting their kidneys checked,” said Cannon.
