Amiah Crisler, 11, drew an extraordinary abstract picture of a dog that earned her first place in her age group and the people’s choice award at the Syracuse News Times 28th Annual Street Painting Festival at the end of July. The masterpiece was etched entirely with sidewalk chalk.

According to, this is Crisler’s second year taking home the top honor. Although she practiced at home for the festival, the colorful dog took her five hours to complete, and she remained focused by listening to music on her purple headphones. “I always listen to Kidz Bop when I do my work,” the artist said. “It’s one of my favorite things to do. It’s really calming.”

Kelly Crisler, the Amiah’s mother, shared photos of her process in a Facebook post that has been viewed nearly 77,000 times.

“I really wanted people to see my artwork,” Amiah said. “I want younger kids to explore their natural talents…I believe every house deserves art.”
