A 5-year-old Chicago boy has survived the second shooting of his young life this week.

Kavan Collins was hit in the face by a stray bullet during a drive-by shooting last June on  Chicago’s South Side. On Tuesday night, he accidentally shot himself in his index finger after discovering his father’s gun under a mattress.

He was in good condition at Comer Children’s Hospital, the same facility he was taken to after being shot last year.

The gun Kavan shot himself with belonged to his father, Kevin Collins, 25, who possessed the gun illegally. He was arrested Wednesday night on multiple felony gun and misdemeanor child endangerment charges.

Following the 2016 shooting that left Kavan with a fractured jaw and chipped teeth, the boy’s mother, D’Antignay Brashear, told the Associated Press she was at a loss as to how to explain her son’s gun wound. Kavan, who was 4 at the time, was walking when the shots rang out.

“I don’t know how to explain it to him,” she told AP last July. “How do you tell a kid, ‘Oh, you got shot.'”

After the second shooting, Brashear said her son is scared.

“Ever since his first tragedy, he (hasn’t) been the same,” she told the Chicago Tribune. “He’s growing up to think that’s what he needs for protection. And he’ll say that out of his own mouth.”
