A 10-year-old Black student in Lenexa, Kansas was brought to tears over comments a teacher made to him.

Malachi Pearson said that his teacher told him that it would be his fault if a police officer shot him when he got older.

“Me and my friend were playing, and then she like pushed us away. We weren’t fighting. We were just playing and laughing,” He told FOX4 on May 15. “She told me when you turn 16 and the police shoot you, the only person you can be mad at is yourself.”

The fourth-grader said he became emotional over the comment because when he was seven months old his father was shot and killed.

”I’m crying because it’s sad that my daddy died when I was a baby,” he said.

His mother, Mahogany Foster, was enraged by the teacher’s actions and removed Pearson from Rosehill Elementary School

”It’s unbelievable that she would say that to my son,” Foster, said. “I’m so vexed by the whole thing. I never take sides, but I know for a fact that Malachi, he’s a respectful child, so for somebody to say that to a respectful child, I feel that was a low blow and that was something personal. You shouldn’t say that to any child.”

Pearson’s mother said that the school’s principal was not willing to help her son by offering counseling services. She accused the school of “trying to sweep this under the rug.”

The school’s district assistant superintendent called Foster two days following the incident and informed her the teacher was placed on leave.

Shawnee Mission Schools would not confirm the news with FOX4 but told the station that “allegations of this nature are taken very seriously” and they “cannot discuss any disciplinary decisions taken against a teacher or employee.”

“I’m just trying to move on from what she said,” Pearson said.
