He told us that we’re in this love together, he inspired us to say all I need is to get my boogie down, he let us know that it’s okay to wish everything and everyone around us mornin.

The world will never forget the sound of jazz icon Al Jarreau, who died Sunday at the age of 76. The seven-time Grammy winner established himself as a jazz legend with a career spanning nearly 50 years. He was known for his smooth voice that glided easily from baritones to tenor, scatting and be-bopping all the way.

Along with greats like Herbie Hancock, George Benson, George Duke, Nancy Wilson, Bobbi Humphrey, Patrice Rushen, Pat Metheney, and others, Jarreau formed a new vanguard for the sound of jazz through the 70s and 80s.

EBONY has collected numerous photos of Jarreau over the years. Here are a few of our best images of him from our archives.
