A Birmingham, Alabama college student for the surprise of his life when he received a car from his boss on the first day of his job due to his commitment to getting to work on time.
Walter Carr walked over 20 miles from the towns of Homewood to Pelham, throughout the night on Friday to start his new job with Bellhops moving company, Al.com reports.
His car broke down on Thursday, but because he wanted the job, he walked for about three hours before being spotted by Pelham police officers who offered a helping hand by buying him breakfast and taking him to his job where he was to help a family move.
“[The cop] proceeded to tell us that he had picked up ‘this nice kid’ in Pelham early this morning. The nice kid, Walter, said that he was supposed to help us with our move today. It was his first day on the job with this moving company (Bellhops) and he was ‘training’ today,” Jenny Lamey, the woman whose home Carr was helping move, wrote on Saturday, according to Al.com.
“He WALKED ALL NIGHT to get from Homewood to Pelham. Because he needed to get to work. For those reading this that are not local, that’s over 20 miles. You could tell how the officer told us this story that he had complete admiration for Walter and by my reaction he could tell I did too,” she continued.
When Bellhops CEO Luke Marklin found out about Carr’s dedication to the job, he drove from Tennessee to meet Carr to thank him and to take him out for coffee, per Al.com. He also had a surprise for Carr, his 2014 Ford Escape.
“I am honestly blown away by him,” Marklin said of Carr. “Everything he did that day is exactly who we are – heart and grit. So far, he’s batting 1,000.”
Carr, who’s graduating from Lawson State Community College in December and has plans to join the U.S. Marines.
“This was the first job in a long time to give me an opportunity to get hired,” he told Al.com. “I wanted to show them I got the dedication. I said I’m going to get to this job one way or another.”
