An Alabama prison escapee telephoned a news station to declare his innocence.
On Wednesday, Antwone Wilson called Fox affiliate WBRC from a number that was restricted. He proceeded to explain why he escaped from prison, which was because he is innocent of the robbery conviction that garnered him a life sentence.
Wilson, along with fellow inmate Ronald King, escaped from St. Clair Correctional Facility in Springville, Alabama, on Monday. King surrendered to authorities on Tuesday.
During a 15-minute conversation with the news outlet, Wilson claimed to be in California, then said he was in Cuba. He would not disclose how he escaped.
Despite being repeatedly prompted to surrender, Wilson said he would only do so if he was granted a new hearing so that he could prove his innocence.
The Alabama Department of Corrections and the U.S. Marshal Service were informed of the call, and the agencies are currently searching for Wilson. According to law enforcement officials, he should be considered dangerous.
