Alvin Ailey is one of the biggest dance companies in the world, but dancers for the organization still feel as if they’re being paid like amateurs.

Several Alvin Ailey dancers began protesting for higher wages last Thursday, arguing they’re paid up to 35 percent less than other major companies’ stars, according to Page Six. The company has been in salary negotiations since December.

“There is no reason we should not be treated as well as our peers!” stated company veteran Akua Noni Parker. Their current contract expires this month. Representatives for the organization had this to say:

“We remain committed to reaching an agreement that is both fair and sustainable.”

Thus far, dancers have boycotted a gala at the Kennedy Center, and could possible do the same for the upcoming Spirit Gala on June 14th at the Lincoln Center, if a negotiation isn’t reached.
