A 10-year-old girl’s suicide devastated Colorado communities in late November. After video of Ashawnty Davis’ encounter with her alleged bully circulated among peers, she hung herself in her home. After being hospitalized for two weeks, she was taken off of life support last Wednesday.
Now, a New Jersey family is struggling to understand why their 8-year-old daughter took her life on Sunday night. Imani McCray of Essex County was in her bedroom while on a timeout according to her parents. When they went to the young girl’s room, they discovered their child had hung herself. She was declared dead at the University Hospital in Newark later that night.
NBC4 reports McCray read about Davis’ tragic story. Investigators are consequently speculating as to whether knowledge of the 10-year-old’s suicide was behind the Essex County girl’s decision to take her own life. Her death occurred just days after Davis passed away. But there is currently no evidence McCray was being bullied. Davis’ death has been referred to by her parents as a case of bullycide.
McCray would have celebrated her ninth birthday next week.
