Black Hollywood's rising stars Ashton Sanders and KiKi Layne star in HBO's upcoming film, Native Son, based on the controversial 1940 novel of the same name by Richard Wright.

On Thursday, the premium cable network released the trailer for the heartbreaking film, which follows Bigger Thomas (Sanders) a young Black man from Chicago, after he becomes a chauffeur for an affluent White businessman. Thomas is quickly faced with choas surrounded by his race and class.

In the preview, Sanders and Layne provide stellar performances that are on par with their roles in Moonlight and If Beale Street Could Talk, respectively.

The screenplay was written by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks, and directed by newcomer Rashid Johnson. The cast includes David Alan Grier, Sanaa Lathan, Elizabeth Marvel and Nick Robinson.

Native Son is co-produced by A24 and will be air on HBO on April 6 at 10 p.m. EST.
