Grammy Award nominee Keyshia Cole is set to release her made-for-TV biopic, Keyshia Cole: This Is My Story on Lifetime,” Billboard reports. The film is a part of the network’s Black Music Month programming.
The biopic is co-directed by D'Angela Proctor and Manu Boyer and the screenplay was written by Angelica Cherri.
Debbi Morgan will play Cole’s late biological mother Frankie Lons. The songstress' adoptive parents Leon Cole and Yvonne Cole, will be played by Joseph C. Phillips and Tonia Jackson. Her biological sisters Neffe and Elite will be played by Cindi Davis and Brittney Level.
In a statement, Cole shared the vision for the biopic and why the timing is right for her to share her story with the world.
“This is a story of a daughter’s love for her mother and although my heart remains broken from her untimely passing I am honored to be sharing it with the world,” Cole said. “Playing the role of myself was a unique opportunity to re-live special moments in my life that also gave me the chance to process her loss in ways I did not expect. I miss her every day and even though she is not here, her presence was felt throughout this film.”
Born and raised in Oakland, California, Cole launched her career as a backup singer for MC Hammer. She released her platinum debut studio album, The Way It Is in 2005. Just Like You, Cole's sophomore album, generated 3 number one R&B singles: "Let It Go" (featuring Missy Elliott and Lil' Kim), "I Remember" and "Heaven Sent.” The LP earned her 4 Grammy nominations. In total, Cole’s released 7 studio albums and 1 EP. She has sold millions of records across the world.
On TV, Cole starred in Keyshia Cole: The Way It Is (2006–2008) on BET which became one of the most-watched programs in the network's history. She has also starred in Keyshia & Danyel: Family First (2012), Keyshia Cole: All In (2015), and was the subject of a documentary special Keyshia Cole: My New Life in 2019.
Keyshia Cole: This Is My Story will air on Lifetime on June 24, 2023 at 8 pm ET.
