By 2030, 42 Percent of Nation Will be Obese

Fat seems to be the hot topic of discussion as recent reports and op-eds on the subject have been published all over. It all may have all stemmed from the Center for Disease Control’s Weight of the Nation conference, which revealed they estimate that by 2030, 42 percent of the U.S. population will be obese.

The lead author on the report, Eric Finkelstein, and his team estimate 11 percent of the population being severely obese, weighing 100 pounds more than they should. Along with the long list of health implications, the additional cost in medical expenditures could rise to $549.5 billion, according to the report in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. The report considered the rising price of healthy food in addition to grocery prices, number fast foods restaurants and annual household income. “If you could keep the obesity rates at today’s level, you would save $550 billion,” said Finkelstein.
