The writers' strike carries on in Hollywood—TV insiders tell EBONY that the SAG-AFTRA Union guild may follow suit as early as the end of the day—but that hasn't stopped the Television Academy from announcing this year's Primetime Emmy Award nominees. Act Your Age star Yvette Nicole Brown and TV Academy chair Frank Scherma had the honor of announcing this year's contenders during a virtual ceremony on July 12.
Abbott Elementary, which is having a stellar sophomoric year under the direction of creator and showrunner Quinta Brunson, is nominated for the second year in a row for "Best Comedy." Brunson received a nod to contend for "Best Lead Actress in a Comedy," while co-stars Janelle James and Sheryl Lee Ralph are both in the "Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series" category, which Ralph took home in 2022. Rounding out nods for the cast is Brunson's on-screen love interest Tyler James Williams who received a nomination for "Best Supporting Actor in A Comedy Series."
Rihanna became a first-time Primetime Emmy nominee in the "Outstanding Variety Special (Live)" category forThe Apple Music Super Bowl LVII Halftime Show Starring Rihanna. The category also gave a nod to the Chris Rock: Selective Outrage live special on Netflix. Lizzo: Live In Concert, Trevor Noah: I Wish You Would and Wanda Sykes: I’m An Entertainer were nominated for "Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded)" and The Daily Show With Trevor Noah got a nod for "Outstanding Talk Show Series." Robin Thede and company are enjoying Black Lady Sketch Show's nomination for "Outstanding Scripted Variety Series," while RuPaul is once again seeing RuPaul's Drag Race on the leaderboard for "Outstanding Reality-Competition Program."
