Protesters are calling for consumers to boycott a Chicago establishment after a suspected shoplifter was kicked and tackled at a location that its owner also owns in Charlotte, N.C.

According to Chicago’s WLS, demonstrators took to Missha Beauty Supply’s storefront in the city’s Bronzeville neighborhood to urge customers to stay away.

“They’re not going to disrespect us, and they’re not going to disrespect our Black community. Simple as that,” said protester Carolyn J. Ruff.

The video, which has since gone viral, shows the Charlotte store’s manager, Sung Ho Lim, an Asian male, blocking the exit of an unidentified Black woman who was accused of stealing merchandise. The altercation increases in intensity. Punches are thrown, the manager brings the woman down to the ground and soon wraps his arm around her head and neck for more than 30 seconds. He eventually lets go and the woman exits the store. Later on, he acknowledged that it was him in the video.

Despite apologizing after filing a police report, Lim’s actions not only resulted in activists rallying, but garnered the attention of the NAACP.

“He took it upon himself to treat her in ways that no woman should be treated, in fact no person should be treated,” Corine Mack, NAACP Charlotte-Mecklenburg branch president told Charlotte’s WBTV earlier this week.

The Chicago demonstrators did not feel the apology was enough.

“Stay out of here. Shut it down. Since they feel that way, that’s the way we feel. Close it up,” James Thomas, a demonstrator, told WLS, which reported that the two stores have the same owner.

The woman has not been arrested or charged in connection to the incident, but the store’s owner reportedly handed over police surveillance video allegedly showing her stealing several pieces of merchandise. When reporters went to the store in Charlotte to speak with Lim, a worker said he had been fired, according to Charlotte’s WSOC.
