New York police are piecing together the circumstances that led to the violent gang rape of an 18-year-old girl last Thursday.

Officials say five youths, ranging in age from 14 to 17, were arrested in connection with the attack. Two were arrested following a police search and two others were brought in by authorities by their mothers.

Police say the woman was accosted just after 9 p.m. Thursday as she walked in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn with her father.

One of the five suspects pointed a gun at her father, telling him to leave. He went to get police and found the woman, but the attackers fled, according to officials. The woman was treated at a nearby hospital and released.
