Business owner Ron Harris and his company, Harris & Sons, were honored on Thursday at the Minority Enterprise Development Luncheon for best Minority Owned Construction Firm in Topeka, Kansas, according to KansasCentral.com

Harris, who used to work for UPS, said that his company, which he started in 1996 and does concrete and water work for Topeka, gives him new opportunities daily.

“No job is the same,” said Harris. “It kind of reminds me of golf, like how no shot is the same.”

The Kansas native said that his journey to becoming a successful business owner was more difficult because he’s Black, but credits lessons taught to him by his stepfather as a recipe for his accomplishment.

“I think it’s harder for a minority to fit in,” Harris said. “I think I had to prove myself.”
