First Black CEO of McDonalds

Donald Thompson has been made the new CEO of McDonalds and will take over on July 1, once retiring chief executive officer Jim Skinner exits the role. Responsible for running the $24 billion dollar fast-food giant, Thompson currently serves as the president and COO of McDonald’s USA where he manages 33,000 restaurants in 119 countries. A graduate of Purdue University, Thompson joins the small club of African-American CEOs running billion-dollar publicly traded companies.

“I’m humbled to take the baton as CEO of McDonald’s,” Thompson said in a statement. “Our management team is strong and will remain focused on the Plan To Win and our three global priorities—optimizing the menu, modernizing the customer experience and broadening our accessibility to even more customers.” Under Thompson’s direction, the company spent $2.4 billion to modernize 2,000 restaurants, construct another 1,000, and created new menu offerings like oatmeal, smoothies, and frappes.

It’s always good to see a brother at the top. But, how do we feel about him running the most popular fast-food chain in the world? And, will this change how McDonalds targets African-Americans? Do we need to be targeted any more than we already are?
