58-year-old Chicago teacher, Betty Howard, killed by stray bullet.
Betty Howard was a special education teacher who knew the dangers of the street first-hand. She worked in Roseland, one of the more violent neighborhoods in Chicago, and her brother is a beat cop who patrols in the same area. On Thursday, she became one of its victims.
Howard was working at her second job in a real estate office late in the afternoon when someone outside fired shots and bullets tore through a wall and she was hit in the head, police said. A 58-year-old old man inside the business was grazed in the stomach, and a 23-year-old woman outside was hit in the hand, police said.
None of three appeared to be the intended targets, according to police, who believe the shooter was aiming at a rival gang member when he opened fire around 5:30 p.m. in the 700 block of East 79th Street. No one was in custody this morning.
