A 21-year-old Black woman was fatally shot after being chased in Chicago’s South Side, WGN 9 reports.
Oceana Jones was killed early Tuesday morning when she and her boyfriend noticed a group of four to five men following them while they were at a gas station.
The couple felt uncomfortable and decided to run when eventually Jones let go of his hand believing she went to hide, he told WGN.
“They thought I was a gang member from over here, but I wasn’t. I don’t gangbang,” her boyfriend, whose identity isn’t revealed, said. “I’m not from around here. When he shot the gun at me, I ran back through this vacant lot, Oceana said, ‘No,’ That’s when I heard another gunshot.”
Jones was shot in the back and died at the scene.
A fight broke out a vigil for Jones on Tuesday evening, where attendees asked for the killers to be brought to justice, per WGN.
Her boyfriend said that he believes she was a victim of a gang war.
“Words can’t explain. I’m heartbroken. Nobody can bring her back,” he told the station.
A $5,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to an arrest and a GoFundMe Page has been set up to assist her family.
