A Nevada cop somehow thought posing in a Halloween costume which broadcasts his White apathy wouldn’t land him a spot in upcoming news cycles.
Silly, officer.
Over the weekend, officer Antonio Gutierrez used his Halloween costume to poke fun at former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s protest against police brutality. A Twitter user posted the photo of Gutierrez at a Halloween party on Sunday. In the picture, he dons a pathetic makeshift Kaepernick jersey, an afro wig, a long fake nose and a sign reading “will stand for food.”
The Twitter user tagged the University of Nevada, Reno police department, where Gutierrez works, in the now private tweet to inform them of their officer’s chosen Halloween garb. To compound the disrespect implied by the officer’s costume, Kaepernick is a 2010 graduate of the University of Nevada, Reno.
“Hey @unevadareno!” the tweet read. “One of your officers, Antonio Gutierrez, decided to go as a racist portrayal of #Kaep last night. this isn’t ok!!”
UNR Police Chief Adam Garcia apologized on behalf of his questionable employee on Sunday.
“For those who have seen the Halloween costume of one of our officers apparently mocking a citizen who has chosen to take advantage of his constitutional right to protest, I offer my sincere apologies,” Garcia said in a statement.
“Members of our profession are held to a higher standard and denigrating another – on or off duty – is insensitive for its lack of respect and lack of understanding on how others may negatively view their actions and may be impacted,” he continued.
But the spokeswoman for the police department said they’re without grounds to reprimand Gutierrez.
“As insensitive and inappropriate as this is, we have no policy that would dictate any disciplinary action,” Kerri Garcia said.
Kaepernick’s protest against police brutality has been condemned by those who refuse to tolerate the reality of being Black in America interfering with their favorite past time. The officer’s costume was just one expression of the ceaseless antagonism the free agent has been facing since he began kneeling during the national anthem last August.
