Dallas County has sworn in its first African-American sheriff, NBC reports.

Marian Brown has been selected to lead America’s seventh largest jail system. Her appointment follows the resignation of former sheriff Lupe Valdez, who resigned to run for governor last year.

During a midnight ceremony on Monday, Brown took the routine oath that makes it official for all sheriff of Dallas County. The retired Duncanville assistant police chief was selected by Valdez, first to be her top assistant and next to be her recommended choice for her successor as sheriff.

The 52-year-old veteran law enforcement official will serve as interim sheriff until November. In that upcoming election, voters will choose a new, permanent sheriff.

“I think it’s important that the person who serves as the interim can say to people, ‘Look, business as usual,'” Brown said previously.

Brown has listed her priorities as learning more about issues involving jails and zeroing in on rebuilding trust between the community and the department.

In her new role, Brown will be tasked with supervising roughly 2,000 employees and 5,000 inmates at the Dallas County Jail.

Congratulations, Sheriff Brown.
