Diana Ross, the cover star of EBONY’s Spring 2019 issue, celebrated her 75th birthday on Tuesday. In honor of the legendary singer’s diamond jubilee, hundreds of Black female celebrities and influencers including Debbie Allen shared photos wearing “I’M GONNA WIN” t-shirts.
The shirts are a remake of one worn by the Motown legend in an iconic vintage photo. The action campaign was spearheaded by the Phenomenal Woman, “a women-powered civic engagement and cross-media marketing platform that supports women’s cause through the promotion of the Maya Angelou-inspired ‘Phenomenal Woman’ message.”
"Diana was a trailblazer when she came onto the Motown scene," creator
Meena Harris told Good Morning America. "The industry was predominantly male, and with unapologetic grace and glamour as the lead singer of the Supremes, Diana proved that women can succeed when they show up as their authentic selves."
The proceeds from the sale of the shirt will benefit Higher Heights, “the only national organization providing Black women with a political home exclusively dedicated to harnessing their power to elect Black women, influence elections and advance progressive policies.”
Ross’ daughter Tracee Ellis Ross shared an Instagram video wearing the shirt and explaining the initiative.
“IN HONOR OF MY MAMA ~ @phenomenal.ly recreated this tee in honor of my mama @dianaross’s 75th birthday,” she captioned the post. Support @higherheights4 in building Black women’s political power by getting this tee at the link in my story.”
