Co-stars Donald Glover (Lando Calrissian) and Phoebe Waller-Bridge (L3-37) sat down with EBONY after the premiere of Solo: A Star Wars Story to discuss becoming a toy, living up to actor Billy Dee Williams’ role and the purity of love.

Calrissian was Waller-Bridge’s first action figure as a child. She speaks to the wonder of knowing children will be playing with a toy version of her character in the future. Glover also speaks about Williams bringing a “flare” to Calrissian’s character when he played the role in the ’80s.

Their characters are in love in the film, but L3-37 is a robot. That unconventional union is used to ask Glover about the backlash he received for being in a real-life interracial relationship after the release of his This Is America video, which is perceived as a pro-Black piece of art. “I think who you love intrinsically becomes a part of your identity,”  he explains. “People want to be able to define your identity. It’s a part of our nature.” Glover feels people do this as a means to label and place others in boxes to be more easily understood.

Hear what he has say to about love in the video above. Solo: A Star Wars Story will hit theaters on May 25.
