Rapper 50 Cent appeared on The View to discuss if the Me Too movement should change the art of rap and the backlash he received for posting an insensitive comment about actor Terry Crews’ alleged assault.

When asked by co-host Whoopi Goldberg if rappers should reconsider their lyrical content in the wake of the Me Too movement, the rapper said, “I think the Me Too movement is important but for artists should I tell you what to paint?”

He continued to explain how censoring your music doesn’t take into account the type of artist you are. “A lot of times, the artists creatively only know how to capture things they can actually reach… they have limited range of writing, or they would have to study to write things that are socially the right things.” That process 50 believes will take the “fun” out of creating music you can dance to. When discussing more “conscious” rappers including Childish Gambino, he says they are “smart guys” who can play anything when they get involved in film and television.

He was then asked if he learned anything after the backlash he received for posting a message seemingly making fun of Crews’ testimony about his alleged sexual assault. “I would never make fun of any sexual assault victim,” the rapper asserted. “I wasn’t looking at Terry Crews that way at that point. I’m looking at The Hulk. The guy that’s this big that’s been taking advantage of.” 50 Cent said that he wouldn’t be prepared for what happened to Crews either but believes he would end up in jail from his reaction.
