Andrea Kelly, R. Kelly’s ex-wife, appeared on a recent episode of The View to break silence on the years of alleged abuse she suffered at the hands of her former husband.

The pair were married from 1996 to 2009, during which the singer was sued three times for alleged sexual contact with teenagers and stood trial on multiple counts of child pornography. Andrea Kelly maintained her silence throughout her 13-year marriage.

When asked why she decided to speak up now, the professional dancer declared it was “about saving lives.”

Andrea Kelly continued, “You cannot, not speak when someone’s life and what they’ve been is parallel to yours…It’s different when you hear words that ring true to your spirit because you survived it. I wanted to bring validity to these women’s story because so much of it falls on deaf ears.”

During the segment, the 44-year-old recounted one alleged incident when R. Kelly nearly killed her in the back of a Hummer.

“I said, ‘Robert, you’re going to kill me. I can’t breathe,'” she said. “I just thought, ‘Oh, my God. I’m going to die in the back of this Hummer.'” Andrea Kelly also claimed that anything would set her former husband off including the temperature of the milk he would have with breakfast.

After initially sharing her story this past June, the mother of three said her children were bullied, and she was victim-shamed.

“People actually said, ‘She’s coming out because she needs money’ or ‘She didn’t say anything because she got money,'” Andrea Kelly said. “There’s not enough money in the world for any woman to stay and get abused.”

Since then the R&B singer released “I Admit,” a 19-minute song, in which he addressed the allegations made about him in the last two decades.

It was a moment when her youngest daughter reacted to R. Kelly’s meanness toward her that finally made Andrea Kelly decide to leave.
