While the relatively huge success of filmmaker Ava DuVernay's "Middle of Nowhere" should come as no surprise, given her public relations background, congratulations are still in order. DuVernay's new film topped independent film box offices, grossing an impressive $78,030 in its first weekend. Per theater, that amount comes out to about an $13,005 average.
"Middle of Nowhere" first appeared in select cities across the country, including New York and Los Angeles, with plans to bring the film to 16 additional cities such as Chicago, Houston, Seattle and Detroit. DuVernay released the highly-acclaimed film through the African American Film Festival Releasing Movement (AaFFRM), and Participant Media. Breakout actress Emayatzy Corinealdi and "Sparkle" actor Omari Hardwick star as a married couple going through major life transformations.
