Black-ish returned Tuesday night with the script on fleek and the actors on woke.

For its Season 4 debut, the ABC show schooled viewers about Juneteeth and served us some ice-cold facts via song. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers who were led by Major General Gordon Granger, arrived in Galveston, Texas with news that the war ended and enslaved people were now free. This came two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation, which became official on January 1, 1863.  Since that day, the observance of Juneteenth has spread across the United States as a symbol of African American freedom.

The musical-inclined episode also included an animated clip from The Roots that explains the origin of the holiday. Black Thought starts the video off singing “I am a slave, yes I’m only a slave. They’ll place my body in an unmarked grave.” Watch the full clip below.
