‘Black Panther’ Actor Winston Duke to Play MMA Fighter Kimbo Slice

Winston Duke, who became a heartthrob after his role as M’Baku in Black Panther will be portraying Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson in Backyard Legend, a biopic about the late MMA legend, confirms Deadline.

Kimbo Slice was a homeless streetfighter who rose to mixed martial arts fame after videos of his backyard brawlers accumulated large numbers on YouTube. He died in June 2016 at the age of 42 from a liver mass and heart failure. Although there were concerns about him fighting month before his death due to his health, the fighter continued his career.

He won a three-round heavyweight match against Dhafir “Dada 5000”. Before his sudden death, he was scheduled to take on James Thompson in a main event.

The screenplay will be written by Andy Weiss, who is responsible for penning White Boy Rick. Michael Imber, a longtime friend of Ferguson’s, will serve as an executive producer on the film alongside Duke. Imber, who was also the fighter’s manager, will be depicted onscreen though his role has yet to be cast.

“I’m looking forward to exploring Kimbo’s story and interrogating the expectations society places on men like him who are their own special breed of hero,” Duke said about playing Kimbo in a movie.

There is no word on when the movie is scheduled to be released.
