Black Panther director Ryan Coogler finally revealed what happened to Erik Killmonger’s mother.

In the commentary section on the record-breaking film’s upcoming Blu-Ray release, Coogler says that Killmonger’s mother was in prison, per the Hollywood Reporter.

Sterling K. Brown’s character N’Jobu is seen talking to Zuri, played by Denzel Whitaker, and are planning to break her out. N’Jobu falls in love with Killmonger’s mother before the event of the film.

Fans of the movie know that the plan doesn’t happen and she met an unfortunate end.

“The idea was when you see those guys talking over the paperwork in the beginning of the film, they’re talking about a way to break her out of jail,” Coogler explains. “The idea was they never got her out, and she passed away in prison, so Killmonger didn’t come up with a mom either.”

Black Panther comes out on digital platforms on May 8 and DVD/Blu-Ray on May 15.
