Uzo Aduba To Star In Race-Based Drama Based On Roots
In her next feature film, Uzo Aduba is returning to her roots. The woman behind Orange Is The New Black’s Crazy Eyes is set to star in Showing Roots, a film based around the landmark movie adapted from Alex Haley’s novel Roots: The Saga of an American Family. In it, Aduba, along with Maggie Grace (Taken 3), set out to unite their small Southern town after Roots debuts, yet are met with bubbling racial tensions. Filming is slated to begin this month in Baton Rouge, LA. “The subject matter has only gotten more relevant in this country,” said Michael Mailer, a co-producer on the project. “It’s a movie that deals with racial healing.”

For all the talk of cultural appropriation, young Black artists are still moving the needle, according to Forbes. The publication dropped its fourth annual collection of lists dubbed 30 Under 30, which honors power players in their 20s or younger. The music list features more than one-third Black figures, including 21-year-old MC Chance The Rapper, Azealia Banks, Big Sean, producers Mike WiLL Made It and DJ Mustard, A$AP Rocky, Nas’ manager Anthony Saleh, and Kai Wright, VP at Revolt. This year’s class omits past honorees, focusing on new faces “with a shot of disruptive entrepreneurialism.”
